For the earliest Christians, having “faith” was less about “believing in” Jesus, and much more about “following” Jesus. The earliest Christians realized that the power of being a Christian was first found in living by the example that Jesus demonstrated in his life.

In Galatians, Paul speaks of the fruits of the Spirit of Christ in these words: “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control”. These words all describe a “lifestyle” of following an example. During Lent we will explore different witnesses of Christ who have “followed” Jesus in word and deed. May these witnesses be an inspiration to all of us who are on our Lenten Journey this year.

Sundays in Lent 2012 – “Following Jesus” – Services – 8:30 and 10:45 am

We will explore what it means to follow Jesus in 21st century America.  Each week during worship, we will begin with time for reflection, using stories from famous and not so famous Christians to serve as inspirations for us to “follow” Jesus.  We will use the African American Spiritual “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me” as a liturgical focal point in worship.

Wednesday Evenings in Lent 2012 – “Listen, Listen God is Calling!”

We will use the Hymn, “Listen…Listen God is Calling”  and a modified version of Holden Evening Prayer to frame our worship experience. We have invited several persons from our community, as well as our pastors, to describe how God has called them to follow Jesus in their life.  Each week we will explore the unique ways that God has called people to service in “following” Jesus.

  • February 29 – Pastor Pam Lange, Mount Carmel
  • March 7 – Linda Ertel, Mount Zion and Tosa Cares
  • March 14 – Marge Johnson, Reformation and Reformation Ministries
  • March 21 – Ron Bohrer, Mt Meru Coffee Ministry, Greater Milwaukee Synod
  • March 28 – Pastor Johnson, Mount Carmel

Soup Suppers – 6:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall; Worship – 6:45 p.m. in the Worship Area.

How is Jesus’ calling you into a deeper commitment as his disciple?  How is Jesus asking you to consider to more profoundly witness to the “gifts of the spirit” of God  in your family, school, workplace and neighborhood?
