First official class: Sunday, September 21st, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
The confirmation program at Mount Carmel Lutheran Church serves young
people in 7th and 8th grade. The confirmation program is seen as one step
in a life-long journey of faith that includes baptism, Christian education
classes, worship, and individual spirituality and prayer. The purpose
of the confirmation program is to help students come to a place in their
faith where they can say with confidence what their parents said for them
when they were baptized—that they believe in God as Creator, Son,
and Holy Spirit, and that they understand them selves as a holy part of
God’s unfolding plan of salvation.

Confirmation classes meet on Sunday evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m. They
are taught by our family minister, Diane Roznowski (7th grade), and our
Associate Pastor, Rachel Young Binter (8th grade). In addition, each class
is served by adult mentors who work with the young people small
group discussions each week. These mentor groups have built strong relationships
between our youth and faithful adults and have become places of prayer,
deep sharing, and spiritual support.
The confirmation curriculum covers a wide range of topics including Lutheran
Church History, Lutheran theology, Lutheran worship, Baptism and Holy
Communion, forms of prayer, the Creeds, the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten
Commandments, and the Christian life. In teaching, we strive to use various
teaching techniques, with hands on activities as well as lectures and
discussions, in order to meet the many learning styles of our youth.
Confirmation requirements include sermon notes, service projects, an
interview with an adult person of faith, and an interest project. Confirmation
students also participate in “worship teams” that give them
a chance to serve the congregation through participation in worship, education,
the arts, or music. Examples of worship team activities include putting
on a puppet show for our younger children, playing handbells for worship,
creating scenery for the Sunday School Christmas program, dying fabric
for window coverings in the Sunday School rooms, and serving as classroom
assistants. These worship teams take place mostly during the Sunday School
hour and have been a wonderful way for our young people to express their
faith and serve their church. Students also participate in a weekend retreat each year focusing on discovering their spiritual gifts, or learning about the life of Jesus Christ and exploring their relationship with Him. To see photos from last fall's retreat, click here.
